Murder By Numbers – The Police

Fall 1983. I’m at a soccer tournament. I’m waiting for our next game. Just sitting behind a net. Two players from another team are nearby. Scottish accents. Cool mullets. Juggling a soccer ball with this tune blasting from a boom box. I didn’t realize it right away until their father came over. We had played on the same team in a house league my first year of organized soccer. Their father, Mr. Thompson, was our coach. I became aware of so many other things in this moment. There was a dividing line for what I perceived as “cool”. I was on the outside of it and I had no idea how to get on the right side of it. Shortly after though, I bought the album. This was the last song on the second side. Not sure if I was trying to get on the right side of things but I knew this tune was on it.
